Incoming Kisumu Senator Fred Odumo Nying’uro has sent special greetings to all Kenyans as the nation observes the 61st Madaraka Day celebrations.
Wakili was speaking from East Kano, Wawidhi Ward, Ayueyo sub-location where he presided over a ceremony to hand over a completely furnished house which he had undertaken to construct for the family of the late Hezbone Ochieng. During the burial of the deceased, last year, Wakili had seen the sorry state of his house and promised his family that he will provide for them a more decent abode.
Hezbone Ochieng was a Bodaboda rider who was killed by unknown persons in Ahero town.
“Today we celebrate the spirit of freedom, independence and self-determination that defines our great nation. On this special occasion, let us reflect on the sacrifices made by our forefathers and the progress we’ve achieved as a nation,” said Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro.
Madaraka Day is a national holiday marked on 1st June of every year to commemorate the day in June 1964 when Kenya earned self-rule from 20 years of colonial domination by the British to become a Republic.
Wakili said that it’s important to reflect on the sacrifices our independence heroes subjected themselves to in order to buy the freedoms we currently enjoy as an entitlement.
Meanwhile, contrary to an earlier directive this year’s event will be covered by all media houses, without discrimination.
The Principal Secretary, the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Prof. Edward Kisiangani, has issued an order that the media plays a crucial role in highlighting issues in society and therefore there will be be no discrimination against any media house as they will all be given a chance to cover the national day.
Kisiangani made the statement at a breakfast meeting held for all journalists at a hotel in Bungoma, yesterday.
The epicentre of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be a presidential function held at Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, Bungoma County.
