GOVERNOR James Orengo wants the 20,000 capacity Siaya stadium named in honor of the doyen opposition leader Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
Orengo said he will consult the Odinga family so as to give a green light.
Orengo asked Speaker George Okode and MCA’s to initiate a public participation for the public to give input on the proposed name.
The County boss said if the public endorses it and the motion debated and approved in the assembly will name the stadium in honor of Jaramogi.
“once its approved by stakeholders, there will be no qualms if the stadium is named after Jaramogi,”
By doing so, we reflect on the enduring legacy of a man who played a pivotal role in the nation’s struggle for independence.
However, The multi-million shilling Siaya stadium whose construction kicked off six years ago is set for completion within the next three months,
The 20,000 capacity stadium will be one of the best sports facilities in the region, capable of hosting international soccer and athletic events.
“Our hope is that by mid-August, the stadium will be ready for use and I want Otiende Amollo (Rarieda MP) and senator Eddy Oketch to help persuade Bunge FC to come and grace the occasion by playing a curtain raiser for a match between Gor Mahia and a team we are trying to talk to come and participate in the opening ceremony” said governor Orengo.
Orengo was impressed by the construction works saying the contractor workmanship is good.
“We are proud of work done in terms of concepts and the architecture of the stadium and what is turning out to be,” said Orengo adding that in terms of track and field work, it’s possible that we have the best in the region
The county boss said the pavilion it’s huge and we intend to use all the space.
He further lauded the contractor for jumpstarting the project and expediting it after delaying for years.
“We decided to terminate contract of the fist Chinese contractor doing the project and the one that assumed the job has proved that they have capacity,” said Orengo.
