Flamboyant Nairobi lawyer and Kisumu Senatorial aspirant Fred Odumo Nying’uro this afternoon took the Kenya Kwanza administration to task over the issue of double taxation as encompassed in the contentious 2023 Finance Bill.

The lawyer termed the Bill a bad idea that would only add strain on the already burdened mwananchi.

“My criticism of the government’s double taxation is premised on 2023 Finance Bill’s impact on the already overburdened payslip. I see it as untimely and a bad idea, given the strain it would place on individual’s finances.”

Nying’uro went on to appeal to the government to pay attention not to fall into the trap of financial policies that tend to have a negative impact on the economy instead of uplifting Kenyans livelihoods.

“My call for the government is to listen to the people’s plight and alleviate the tax burden to allow us to breathe,” said Nying’uro, adding “It’s essential for governments to consider the impact of policies on the everyday lives of their citizens and strive for a balance between revenue generation and ensuring the well-being of the populace.”

Nying’uro now joins a stream of Kenyans who have voiced discontent with the Finance Bill, 2023.

Among other contentious issues the Bill had proposed that contributions be refundable or be used to finance purchase of houses under affordable housing, the legislated change now places a non-refundable levy of 1.5% payable by both employer and employee. Another significant change is the introduction of new PAYE (Pay as You Earn) tax bands.
