Police Fire Teargas, Arrest Protestors As Kenyans Say NO to Finance Bill 2024

The Nairobi area Police Commandant Adamson Bungei has maintained that the ongoing protests in parts of Nairobi are illegal as the convenors did not apply for neither were granted licenses.

From a heavy police presence along most street corners events have escalated to run-ins with the police being forced to unleash force to quel the mounting defiance.

video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, police officers in uniform and civilian clothes handcuffed Kenyans wearing black T-shirts and forced them onto a stationary police van.

The Kenyans could be heard shouting slogans, pushing for the rejection of the contentious Finance Bill 2024 that proposes draconian taxes on Kenyans undergoing a harsh economic period.

“Down down finance bill. Kenyans, why am I being arrested? Do not accept that Finance Bill,” a handcuffed man wearing a black shirt chanted as he was escorted by police officers near the Kencom building in Nairobi.

A short while ago at the  Kenya National Archives police were seen bundling Kenyans into a police van stationed on the kerb.

“Why are you arresting me? We are peaceful people,” one of the detainees was heard telling the police officers.

The heavy deployment of police officers dressed in uniform and civilian clothes and armed to the teeth came after Kenyans online agreed to protest on Tuesday, June 18.

A section of Kenyans convened under the hashtags #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament to express mass anger on punitive tax laws at the proposal stage in the National Assembly.
