The Nurturing care program that was launched in Siaya in 2018 has gained momentum with LREB counties embracing it to cure infant mortality and maternal deaths.
Already 8 counties are adopting the technique that has been proven by Siaya and found to be working.
The program has received a major boost today after Siaya First Lady Mama Betty Orengo together with Bomet Deputy Governor Rotich launched Nurturing care curriculum targeting ECD trainers .
It’s the launch of the curriculum that marked the day of African child event that was held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.
“We are doing the Nurturing care curriculum launch that would help strengthen the program and ensure gains realized are guarded,” said Mama Betty.
We are proud to be associated with the program dubbed Nyathi en Mwandu, miye mise motegno chon(a child is wealth, provide it with a strong foundation while still young).
“The program has attracted 22 partners,” Education Executive Edgar Otumba disclosed..
KMET’s Abella Awuor says she was happy that the programme is unstoppable and infiltrating LREB counties with county governments taking the lead.
The idea was backed by CEO Victor Nyagaya and Bomet Deputy Governor Shadrack Rotich.
“As Bomet, we have rolled out school feeding program targeting the ECD learners. We give them milk twice in a week,” said Rotich.
Mama Betty at the same time urged Siaya parents to focus on Education.
“This years day of the African child theme is focused on Education and I want to urge parents not to tire in educating their children,” she said adding that doing so would revive the region’s academic glory.
Mama Betty raised concerns on dwindling performance of former academic giants.
“Nyanza schools were previously doing well academically. Nyanza used to be a cradle of education, especially Gem, Siaya County. These are long gone days and we need to ask ourselves, where did we go wrong. The schools that used to do well are now underdogs”.
She further lauded the efforts of the assembly women caucus towards advocating for the triple threats targeting the most vulnerable groups in the society.
“Siaya was previously the intellectual factory in the country. As noted in the Nyalore Manifesto, we shall revive strategies that would see the region producing doctors and engineers.
“With emerging new areas, we need to see our children get more into ICT and new technologies,” she added.
She noted that HIV/AIDS, sexual violence on minors and Gender based Violence are still hard nuts to crack in Siaya.
We also have high number of teenage pregnancies.
“Siaya is not doing very well in that area and we are committed towards advocating these triple threats,” she said adding that conversation is underway to introduce policies that will completely tame the vices.
