The Church Must Support the People, Orengo Makes New Call

Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo has called on the church to stand with the people as Kenya undergoes a phase of civil agitation.

Speaking at the burial of the late Legislator Maina Wanjigi in Nyeri County, Orengo said in the past the church had shown great fortitude in repulsing oppressive regimes. He mentioned former Anglican Bishops David Gitari and Alexander Muge who were at the forefront of fighting for civic rights under the oppressive one-party rule.

“A time has come when the Church in Kenya must stand with the people. This country needs men of the cloth like Bishop Mukuba Gitari and Alexander Muge who were on the frontline in defending the rights of the people.”

Senior Counsel Orengo recalled the many times he and others had to seek sanctuary at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi CBD in order to avoid arrest by police during peaceful picketing.

He also urged the youth not to relent on the pressure they have been applying on the Kenya Kwanza government. Acknowledging that the pressure was bearing fruits Orengo said:

“To the young people of this country, the gen z, don’t tire because the time is now, the hour has come to rescue this country from the yoke of dictatorship, corruption, unemployment and tribalism. I support your call for justice.”

Although there has been a rattling within the ranks of Gen Z in the last two days the movement appears resolutely determined to forge on with calls for reforms in key government positions as well as revocation of untenable laws, especially on taxation.

James Aggrey Bob Orengo was himself a firebrand activist before he was swallowed into the somnolence of the Gubernatorial position.

Also present during Wanjigi’s sendoff was Azimio leader Raila Amollo Odinga among others.
