Kisumu County Senatorial aspirant Senior Counsel Fred Odumo Nying’uro on Sunday morning responded to the plight of traders at the Garissa Lodge Shopping Mall in the central business district who had their property gutted down by fire.
The fire whose cause is yet-to-be-established occurred Saturday night razing down property worth hundreds of thousands and leaving behind a trail of destruction that decimated 35 stalls into ashes.
Situated in the heart of Kisumu town Garissa Lodge Shopping Mall hosted small-scale businesses including tailors, food kiosks and photocopy “cyber” shops.
Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro in the company of Lady Nancy Denga and the Chairman of Garissa Lodge Business Association inspected the debris from the tragic fire.
One of the traders Nicholas Obwar said he had not only lost his source of livelihood but also was now at peril of going to jail since he had no other means of servicing the loan he procured to set up his screen-printing workshop. Another trader, a woman with arms clasped on her head wailed implacably saying she was a widow and the food vending business that was burnt down was the sole source of sustenance for her family.
Touched by their plight a visibly moved Fred Odumo Nying’uro donated a tidy sum of money to cater for emergency subsistence for the affected families.
Odumo promised to liaise with County Government officials and Non-governmental Organizations to see to it that the families who lost their livelihoods in the inferno are given some seed capital to start again.
