Police Disperse Saba Saba Demonstrators from CBD Sunday Night

The police last evening dispersed pockets of peaceful demonstrators who had remained within the central business district late after the Saba Saba demonstrations at Uhuru Park.

Thousands of Gen Z left the Uhuru Park gathering but hundreds marched into Nairobi CBD and were still waving flags way past 7pm on Sunday, 7, 2024 prompting the police intervention.

The peaceful demonstration continued up until around 8:20 pm when police officers pleaded with the youth along Moi Avenue to leave peacefully and head back home.

The youth obliged and could be seen leaving Nairobi CBD peacefully.

During the gathering to honour protests’ victims, the youths demanded President Ruto dissolves the government.

There has been wide expectation of a radical cabinet reshuffle if Ruto has to throw many of his people under the bus to save his own skin, but that would undoubtedly be seen against the prism of the growing unrest in Kenya Kwanza with the president and his deputy openly at loggerheads.

Ruto is also under intense scrutiny following his promise to engage the Gen Z protestors without the earlier mischief of infiltrating their ranks.

So far government plans to incorporate Gen Z leaders in a multi-sectoral platform have been repulsed amidst fears it will be populated by youth pliable to pro-government manipulation while the protest movement gets relegated to the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has said the June 25 storming and brief occupation of the Houses of Parliament was part of an attempt to oust President William Ruto’s government.

The government is yet to acknowledge that protestors hail from both sides of the political divide, and that the protests are focused on removing repressive taxation and bad governance.
