Finally ceding ground to the demands of anti-taxation protestors, Kenyan president William Samoei Ruto has sacked all Cabinet Secretaries except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and his Deputy.
The move comes amidst mounting pressure from the Gen Z protestors who have threatened to overrun State House in their demands for a change in the government. It remains to be seen if the protestors will be appeased by Ruto throwing his cabinet under the bus.
On Tuesday opposition leader Raila Odinga came under intense criticism when he met the president at a function in KICC and claimed to have come to an understanding with the president to give dialogue a chance. The Gen Z protestors reaffirmed that Raila does not have the mandate to speak on their behalf.
This must have informed the president that the present situation even Raila cannot be used as an intermediary as he was used during crises in past governments.
While making a press briefing at State House on Thursday Ruto said he arrived at the decision after “reflection, listening to Kenyans, and after holistic appraisal of my cabinet.
Ruto proceeded to announce the sacking of the whole cabinet save for Gachagua and Mudavadi. Notably, the Attorney General who is the legal advisor to the president has also been sacked.
