Kenya’s Police Chief Japheth Koome Resigns

Facing a sure prospect of sacking as pressure mounts from anti-government protestors, Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome has resigned.

Through a post on X the National Police Service announced early Friday afternoon that the president had accepted Koome’s resignation.

“His Excellency Hon William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July, 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service.”

Now the Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Douglas Kanja will take over the docket in an Acting capacity.

President Ruto also appointed Eliud Langat as the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.

Ruto further appointed James Kamau as the Acting Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.

Koome was elevated to the position of Inspector General of Police in September 2022.

He took over from Hillary Mutyambai who went on a terminal leave citing medical concerns.

Koome was formerly the Nairobi County Police Commander and a Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo.

Koome is a career officer who rose through the ranks in the service to be IG.

He served as Officer Commanding Police Station at Central Police in Nairobi and also as the Regional Commander for Nairobi.

Before being appointed IG Koome served at Police Headquarters as Principal Deputy of Deputy Inspector General of police Edward Mbugua.

He is a civil engineer by training.

The Inspector General’s Office was established following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.

Retired Inspector General of Police David Mwole Kimaiyo was appointed the first office-holder on December 20, 2012 and served upto 2014.
