Controversy-ridden Gunda Nina Dispensary is slated to open any time now.
Following a visit on Wednesday by CEC Heath Dr. Martin K’Onyango the facility which was constructed in 2011 but has been in-operational due to wrangling between the community and a Kisumu-based church leader may soon open its doors to the public.
The church leader took the community to court contesting ownership of the parcel of land upon which the dispensary was constructed. It has taken two decades for the court to make a determination and revert ownership of the land to the community.
The county government of Siaya through lobbying by area Member of County Assembly Felix Judy Okumu recently renovated the establishment.
In one of his visits through the area as he headed to Siriwo Rice Mill in Usonga, Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo promised residents of Kaugagi Nina that one of the areas’ priorities was to get the health facility operational.
Dr. K’Onyango’s visit on Wednesday therefore was meant to evaluate the dispensary’s readiness and identify the necessary resources to facilitate its opening.
During his interaction with the residents of Alego Kaugagi, community members expressed their urgent need for the dispensary to commence operations. They highlighted the considerable distance they must travel to the Hawinga Health Centre to seek treatment, which poses significant challenges for accessing essential healthcare services.
In response, Dr. K’Onyango assured the community that he would prioritize the dispensary’s opening, emphasizing the importance of having local healthcare options readily available.
Dr. K’Onyango also visited Hawinga Health Centre to observe the current service delivery. The impromptu visit allowed him to gain insight into both the challenges faced by the facility and the successes achieved thus far. He was privileged to interact with Matibabu attaches and encouraged them to continue their good work.
