Courts to Remain Open During Nane-nane Protests — Judiciary Leadership Team

The Judiciary Leadership Team has resolved to open courts on Thursday, August 8, 2024, ahead of the Nane Nane protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 7, the Judiciary Leadership Team indicated that it has taken into account all the security measures.

To enable the courts to dispense justice, the Judiciary indicated that some sessions will leverage on technology.

Further, the Judiciary Leadership Team added that a security team has been deployed to ensure safety of court users and personnel.

“To uphold the Constitution, the Judiciary Leadership Team has resolved that courts will remain open, all considerations of safety and security taken into account, and will, as much as possible, leverage technology and virtual courts to ensure continued dispensation of justice,” a statement from the Judiciary Leadership Team read in part.

“We assure all court users that the Judiciary Police Unit, in co-ordination and collaboration with local police stations, is working diligently to ensure the security of court facilities and the safety of court users and Judiciary personnel,” it added.

Nonetheless, the Judiciary team urged the protesters and security officers to adhere strictly to the Constitution while engaging in the protests and also while enforcing the law.

Police orders
On the other hand, Acting Inspector General National Police Service Gilbert Masengeli cautioned the public that criminals are planning to infiltrate tomorrow’s Nane Nane demonstrations and commit further crimes.

Masengeli said that the Police has deployed adequate security personnel, but advised members of public to take extra caution while in crowded areas that are likely to turn riotous.

He further cautioned members of the public against contravening the Kenya Civil Aviation Act and Protected Areas Act by avoiding trespass of protected areas such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and State House/Lodges.

Govt’s plea
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has also advised Gen Z, who have been the major proponents of the protests, to avoid unchecked demos.

“The Government urges the youth to ignore these calls to violence, as they offer little benefit to them and instead emphasize the importance of peace and stability. Young people should avoid unchecked protests, which could lead to further economic hardships and hinder their chances of gaining employment,” the statement added.
