What Next for Gen Z?

Spread the love

The bane of all popular revolts is the sedentary middle class. Kenya is no exception.

Watching Kasmuel Mc’Oure dodging two riot policemen and then darting into Nation Center during the Nane-nane protests yesterday I saw the end of the Gen Z uprising.

I saw a young man full of ideals being chased by two young men who are hostages to their payslips. If the revolt was about addressing issues of corruption and mismanagement in government then here was a stark disparity of goals. Against their will the young man full of ideals was trying to Liberate the two rudderless young men after his skin.

Police officers in Kenya are recruited after scoring some of the lowest marks in national exams and if they had received KES 6,000 apiece as sources claim, then they were just right to attempt to beat out the daylights out of the protestors.

What I said here and noone paid attention to because am not a big wig is that the Gen Z lost it when they went back home on the night of June 25. After accessing Parliament and having the military to negotiate with that was the apex, quintessential moment defining a revolt. They should have not gone back from there.

If they did, and I said it here, they would be opening themselves to disenfranchisement. In Dholuo we say “Srikal bade bor”. State machinery would be employed to scuttle them. Here am not talking about Osama Otero or Hanifa taking something and turning double-agent, no, am talking about the intelligence arm of State machinery.

Who did what in Githurai on the night of June 25; foreign investments at risk; the politics of inclusivity as a means of self-preservation etcetera. I’m talking big Politics.

That’s why I said here that inasmuch as the faceless, tribe less mantra is a noble idea, the issues on the table are political and therefore the Gen Z must come out and play politics.

Mistrust in their ranks undermined this possibility. The next logical avenue was for an established politician who knows how to haggle deals to steal the wave created by Gen Z.

Raila is not such an enigma as popular press portray him, but he has grown up playing politics from childhood. He could see an open aperture and make good use of it.

With the official opposition inside Government the youth remained with rhetoric and ideals. That’s the painful truth.

Anyone expecting that the newly appointed cabinet will do things any different from all the corrupt administrations before it is a dreamer. It is back to factory settings. The Luo think it’s their turn to eat. And the government will look for a scapegoat, likely Jimi Wanjigi.

So when I watched Kasmuel Mc’Oure darting into Nation Center with the speed of an Olympian and I searched all the television channels to no avail expecting to see the Luos demonstrating in Nyanza, I knew it’s over.

Please someone tell Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen from me that being appointed a CS for Sports did not warrant such ostentatious celebrations. It’s like wiping your nose on the Gen Z. And the internet never forgets.

Good day
