Ugandan police have issued a statement to clarify that Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka BOBI WINE was hit by a teargas canister and not a live bullet as sensationally claimed by a section of the press.
Using evidence provided in an independent video footage that shows Kyagulanyi being hit as he tries entering his vehicle, the police have said that whoever fired the cannister was not aiming specifically at Kyagulanyi but was intended to disperse the crowd around him.
Kyagulanyi’s handlers still maintain he was shot.
Uganda Police Force (UPF) said an investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts.
They however denied claims that an officer (whose photo went viral on social media) shot and injured the opposition leader.
In a statement on its X page on Tuesday, the UPF said Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his car and sustained an injury which his team claims is from a gunshot.
Police explained that Bobi Wine had on Tuesday attended a thanksgiving ceremony staged by Lawyer George Musisi, in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District.
The ceremony was concluded peacefully and Bobi Wine left the venue where he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town.
Police said they had advised against the procession.
The UPF said despite its guidance, Bobi Wine insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.
“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot,” police said.
The Force stated that Bobi Wine had since been taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo for first aid.
“The police will investigate the alleged shooting and any related incidents,” UPF said
