Why Raila Amollo Odinga is Best-suited to Lead the African Union Commission

Spread the love

Raila Amollo Odinga, Kenya’s candidate in the African Union Commission Chairmanship race is taking on a candidate from Djibouti with very solid diplomatic credentials.

Raila himself had a stint at AU as Commissioner of Infrastructure where his diplomatic acumen was put to test.

Although he has a grudge with the Gen Z youth, my humble submission is that Raila Odinga is best-suited to serve Africa as Chairman of AU Commission.

During the launch of his candidacy at State House last week we faulted Raila’s candidature on the basis of fixation with lofty ideologies of Pan-Africanism while he glosses over on the endemic corruption ravaging the morals of Africa’s leadership.

It has since come to our notice that the former Kenyan Premier has qualities instrumental to spur the continent onto the footpath of development. It’s only Raila Odinga who speaks to Africa’s Heads of State as an equal. It’s only Raila who has universal goodwill and suffrage.

Just the other day, Raila Odinga was formally endorsed by President William Ruto at State House Nairobi in concert with several Heads of State from the East African community.

Because of his lengthy role in politics Raila Odinga has amassed vast political and geopolitical experience locally and internationally. This cannot be said of any of his fellow competitors.

Although advanced in age the doyen of Kenya’s opposition politics has proven time and again that his mental acuity is intact, more so when he articulated the continent’s development agenda in his previous role at AU infrastructure. Raila is a true Pan-Africanist.

With the February 2025 elections in Ethiopia beckoning we now join the majority bandwagon to wish Mr. Odinga success.

May the constellations align in his favour.

Having said that may I now turn to another thorny issue….. that of the government pushing Junior Secondary Teachers to sign new contracts in another year of internship.

It doesn’t matter that KNUT betrayed this cadre of teaching staff, the government is to blame.
