Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has alleged that the government is trying to silence a whistleblower who exposed the planned takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the India-based Adani Group.
Onyonka said he has information the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is requesting documents from Afrinet Carbon Limited’s CEO, Nelson Amenya, in an effort to intimidate him for revealing details about the deal.
Onyonka now claims the investigations are politically instigated.
He further noted that the requested documents are easily accessible from the Business Registration Service, so the DCI’s actions are a direct witch-hunt.
Onyonka says Afrinet Carbon Limited is linked to the whistleblower who revealed the controversial JKIA deal.
The ODM Party Senator now says that any attempt to persecute the whistleblower violates the Constitution and the Whistleblower Protection Act. He also mentioned his involvement in the issue, saying he had raised concerns in the Senate about the Adani takeover in July 2024.
Meanwhile, workers at Moi International Airport in Mombasa joined the protests against the Adani deal. Led by Kenya Aviation Workers Union officials Walter Ongeri and Robert Lichoro, they argued that the deal would harm Kenyan workers. They asked the government to cancel the plan, citing Adani’s poor reputation in other countries. The workers want JKIA to remain under Kenyan management, as it generates significant revenue. They fear the takeover will lead to job losses if foreign workers are brought in.
