Gachagua Remains at Karen Hospital, Security Scaled-down

Impeached former Kenyan Deputy President Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua is still hospitalised at Nairobi’s Karen Hospital where he was admitted on Thursday following an undisclosed sudden illness.

According to certain sources doctors attending the former DP revealed that his condition necessited a bed rest of between 48 to 72 hours.

Gachagua was expected to appear before Senate for cross-examination on Thursday afternoon when his lawyer Paul Muite first informed the August House that he could not raise him up and then subsequently passed the information that he was admitted in hospital following an unspecified medical condition.

His medical team has allowed very limited access to the embattled DP.

Meanwhile a spot-check by Citizen TV has revealed that the heavy security presence that was initially accorded the DP outside Karen Hospital on Thursday has now been visibly scaled-down. Observers attribute this to the impeachment which was upheld by Senate Thursday night.

In the meantime a court order has l suspended the Senate impeachment making it dicey for former Interior CS Kithure Kindiki who was approved by parliament to take over as Deputy President.

Gachagua still enjoys immense support from pockets of opposition leaders including Wiper’s Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka who advocated at a burial on Friday that the former DPs security be returned.

“The last line of defence in this country now is our Judiciary. When we were attending this funeral service here, we learnt that Justice Chacha Mwita has issued conservatory orders suspending the decision of the Senate to impeach Gachagua last evening,” Kalonzo said on Friday.

It now remains to be seen if the court can nullify Gachagua’s impeachment and how much possible it is for President Dr William Samoei Ruto to work with estranged deputy.
