🌿 Save Yala Swamp: Protect Our Heritage, Secure Our Future 🌿
Dear Friends and Supporters,
We are reaching out to you with an urgent appeal to stand with the Yala Swamp communities in Busia and Siaya Counties, Kenya. Yala Swamp, is our country’s largest freshwater wetland, is not just a vital ecosystem but also the lifeblood of our community. It provides us with food, water, pasture, and medicinal herbs, supporting our livelihoods and preserving our cultural heritage.
However, this precious land is under threat. The National Land Commission has controversially allocated 6,763.74 hectares of Yala Swamp to a private developer (Lake Agro LTD) and also in agreement to allocate another 9,200 hectares to Busia sugar company LTD, jeopardizing our rights and the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem. This move threatens to displace our communities, destroy our natural resources, and compromise our future.
Why Yala Swamp Matters:
Biodiversity Haven: Home to countless species of birds, fish, and plants, Yala Swamp is a sanctuary for wildlife and a critical biodiversity area.
Community Livelihoods: From fishing and farming to weaving and ecotourism, the swamp sustains our daily lives and empowers us economically.
Cultural Heritage: For generations, Yala Swamp has been integral to our traditions and way of life. It is a symbol of our resilience and unity. Settlement area for all residents of Bunyala South Ward.
How You Can Help:
Join us in urging the authorities to revoke the allocation and protect Yala Swamp for future generations.
Spread the Word: Share our story on social media, with friends, and within your networks. Use the hashtag #SaveYalaSwamp to amplify our message.
Support Sustainable Initiatives: Engage with and support local projects that promote sustainable use of Yala Swamp’s resources, ensuring its preservation and our community’s prosperity.
Together, we can make a difference. Your support is crucial in safeguarding Yala Swamp and securing a sustainable future for our community. Let us unite to protect our heritage and ensure that Yala Swamp remains a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.
Thank you for standing with us.
With gratitude,
Khadiangu Opondo Alphonce
