The police have recovered a pistol confirmed to belong to the murdered Wells Fargo manager Willis Ayieko Onyango following a dramatic shootout in the outskirts of Siaya town.

A second arrest was also made of a woman believed to be a girlfriend of the main suspect in the killing of Ayieko.

On Monday the police arrested the first suspect, Victor Ouma Okoth in Dandora Estate of Nairobi who is said to have gone on a shopping spree with proceeds of the crime.

In the Wednesday morning arrest the police tried to intercept a car they had been trailing for some time, prompting a shootout with the main suspect who managed to escape having sustained gunshot injuries to the feet.

Immediately following the dramatic exchange of fire the police mounted roadblocks in major roads leading in and out of Siaya town. Security organs have also sent out an alert to the public and nearby hospitals to help apprehend the culprit.

The fleeing suspect abandoned Ayieko’s pistol, now empty, at the scene. The police are urging local medical facilities to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot injuries.

The arrests are a result of concerted efforts by a multi-agency probe team led by the DCI’s Homicide, Operations and Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) now employing forensic analysis to track down the suspects.

The body of Wills Ayieko Onyango was recovered from a stream around the Gem Nyamninia area in the afternoon of October 23 following his disappearance after attending a burial in the area.

According to a postmortem report conducted by Chief Government pathologist Johansen Oduor and family pathologist Emily Rogena, Ayieko suffered a traumatic death.

“There was bleeding to the brain. Other than that, there were bruises on the wrists caused by some cuffs found on him. There were also missing tissues on the mouth, ear and cheek,” Dr Oduor said.

Oduor further offered explanation to the missing tissue from nose, cheek and mouth as possible predation by water animals.

“They were caused by water animals like fish and crabs. We found a dead crab on the clothes. We think they were targeting the soft parts of the body,” he said. Mr. Ayieko is believed to have expired from blunt force trauma applied to the head.

Those present during the postmortem conducted at Lee Funeral Home, were Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo and Alego-Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Onunga Atandi among friends and family members.

Investigators have now tied-in the murder to ongoing investigations on a KES 94.6 million heist involving employees of the cash-in-transit security firm Wells Fargo where Willis Ayieko Onyango was a Human Resource Manager.

As plans for burial get underway the shocked family is seeking for closure only when the culprits are brought to book and reason given for the brutal murder of their kin.
