Siaya County participated in an impactful workshop organized by the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) to delve into the science of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE). In a show of collective commitment, the governors in attendance discussed strategies to strengthen the foundation of education for children across the region. Emphasizing the critical importance of these early years, Governor Orengo remarked, “We must invest in our children today to ensure a stronger and more prosperous tomorrow. The formative years set the stage for lifelong learning and development.”

Governor Orengo underscored his dedication to the cause by pledging increased financial support towards early childhood education. “I am committed to allocating a budget that will allow us to expand our workforce by hiring more ECDE teachers and healthcare promoters,” he said. This move is aimed at enhancing the quality of nurturing care and raising awareness among communities about the pivotal role that early education and healthcare play in child development. Such initiatives are expected to bridge gaps and ensure that children receive adequate support during their most vulnerable stages.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of effective data collection and the use of metrics to monitor progress. Governor Orengo outlined plans for establishing comprehensive frameworks to track ECDE outcomes across the county. “We need inclusive, reliable data that reflects the status of every child, including those with disabilities,” he stated. By prioritizing data-driven approaches, Orengo and his peers seek to create policies that are both informed and impactful, ensuring that no child, regardless of their background, is left behind.

Other leaders at the event included Prof. Anyang Nyong’o, the LREB Chairperson, and governors Paul Otuoma of Busia, Ken Lusaka of Bungoma, Simba Arati of Kisii, Ochillo Ayacko of Migori, Hillary Barchok of Bomet, and Amos Nyaribo of Nyamira. Their collective presence signaled a unified front among the regional leaders in prioritizing early childhood development. The workshop was further enriched by the participation of LREB CEO Victor Nyagaya, KMET Executive Director Monica Ogutu, and Abella Owuor, Senior Technical Lead for Nurturing Care for ECD, who shared valuable insights and strategies.

This collective commitment underscores the broader vision of sustainable development and the belief that investing in the earliest years of life can lead to profound socio-economic progress for future generations.
