Fresh claims have surfaced regarding alleged interference in the 2022 Kenyan presidential election results, casting a spotlight on the integrity of the judiciary.
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has alleged that former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration bribed Supreme Court judges in an attempt to overturn President William Ruto’s victory.
According to Ahmednasir, four judges received substantial sums of money from individuals linked to the Azimio coalition.
Three judges allegedly received $2 million each, while one, purportedly with a history of corruption, is said to have been paid between $3 million and $3.5 million.
The claims suggest that the alleged payments were part of a broader effort by the Azimio camp to influence the outcome in their favour.
The allegations also extend beyond the Supreme Court, with claims that High Court judges were tasked with delivering bribes to key officials within a constitutional body.
This, Ahmednassir asserts, demonstrates a systemic issue of corruption within the judiciary during the electoral process.
The accusations have reignited public discourse about the impartiality of Kenya’s judiciary and the fairness of the 2022 election.
Although no evidence was provided to substantiate these claims, the allegations have raised serious concerns about the accountability of judicial officers.
Neither former President Uhuru Kenyatta nor the Azimio coalition has commented on the accusations.
As the debate unfolds, Kenyans continue to grapple with questions about the independence of institutions tasked with upholding democracy and justice.
