The Contractor doing the KES 1.2 billion water and sanitation project in Ugunja and Ugenya sub-county seeks to purchase 400 water meters for the service provider (SIBOWASCO) to install and connect residents of Ugunja, Sega and Ukwala to the water grid.
According to Resident Engineer for SEURECA Kenya Peter Ouma, SIBOWASCO will roll out the last-mile water connectivity project in Ugunja, Sega and Ukwala centres and their environs in order to boost water coverage and improve sanitation.
During a water stakeholders meeting held in Ugunja sub-county, Eng. Ouma said that the multimillion project that was funded by ADB Bank through Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency is complete though characterised by certain defects that would be remedied in February.
The engineer said this project will help the residents to be connected with piped water so that the residents can be supplied with clean water that is treated in order to help in reducing waterborne diseases.
“Now that the project is partially handed over to SIBOWASCO, the last mile connectivity that was to be done by the contractor Zhongmei Group Limited shall be rolled out by SIBOWASCO,” said Ouma.
“The 400 water meters meant for the programme shall be procured by the Contractor and handed over to the service provider to install to the people during the implementation of the last mile connection programme,“ Mr Ouma clarified.
He added that the purpose of public participation is to engage with the public on the last mile water connectivity project by sensitising them on environmental impact assessment, and the design of the project.
He urged the communities to cooperate with the contractors, especially where the piping line will be installed.
“Stakeholders should also create awareness in the community for the upcoming social amenities which will largely benefit schools and hospitals.
Siaya Bondo Water and Sanitation Company SIBOWASCO Managing Director Isaiah Adipo assured residents of Ugunja and Ugenya that last mile connectivity will benefit them.
“We had connected the water project to the old water in structure but still other areas are underserved and going forward, with the last mile connectivity, we shall reach more people,” said Adipo.
Directors of Zhongmei Group Limited, Pan Nam and Sonia Lin assured Lake Victoria South water works Development Agency and County Government of Siaya that by February, the project defects will be sorted.
“One of the defects is the water pump valve, and we have bought the needed tools which are already in Nairobi. We shall transport them tomorrow and by Thursday we will have them here in Ugunja,” said Lin.
Adipo was accompanied by a member of the SIBOWASCO Board Victor Makanda and Director Water Henry Juma.
County Committee Member In charge of Water and Environment Prof Jaqueline Oduol asked the contractor to complete the processes and allow the community to access water.
“I want the water coverage to improve from current 55 percent to 65 percent and it’s the programme that will boost it, Am happy to be part of this meeting that has identified gaps that the contractor has agreed to mend before they exit.” Prof. Jaquiline Oduol
The water and sanitation project was funded by African Development Bank.
The multi-billion water and sanitation project is expected to significantly reduce pollution and check waterborne diseases.
The project with pipeline extension up to 98 Kilometres targets Ugunja, Sega-Ukwala which is underserved.
The sewerage and water expansion programme will address long-standing challenges in water and sanitation in the designated areas.
The project is designed to serve 77,000 residents of Ugunja, Sega and Ukwala townships in Ugunja and Ugenya constituencies.
The project is producing 11000 Cubic Meters of water per day instead of the earlier target of 8,000 cubic metres of water per day.
Once the project is completed, water supply in Siaya County will improve from 55 percent to 65 percent.
