The five days Tango-Siaya Surgical Camp has made a remarkable impact, providing life-changing surgeries to 107 patients.
Organized by Siaya’s Department of Health and Canadian surgical doctors the camp addressed the pressing medical needs of individuals who had long endured pain and illness without the financial means to seek treatment.
Dr Evance Ogoti, Bondo Medical Superintendent reflected on the initiative’s success, stating, “It has been a very rewarding week in Siaya for 107 patients that received life-changing surgery and hundreds that consulted with the experts.
The joy among patients was palpable, as many shared their experiences of how their long-awaited surgeries would alleviate their suffering and enhance their quality of life.
According to Dorcas Opande from Masala CU, I have had pains in my stomach for the past three years.
“the growth in my stomach has pained me for years yet I have been attending to people at the village level as a Community health promoter, “said Opande.
“For now, am free of pain and after a week i will embark on my duty as a CHP for Masala village,”
Another patient, George Omollo from Ugenya who was suffering from a groin injury had a successful surgery on Tuesday and he has been discharged.
“i came here while writhing in pain. And had feared won’t come back alive after the surgery processes but I thank God I am alive,” said Omollo.
A 16-year-old Aponix Odhiambo has appreciated governor Orengo for hosting surgery camp in Siaya saying for sure, he means well for Siaya people.
As one surgeon noted, “Challenges bring us together to work together.
This is not a journey for one person; it’s a journey for every one of us.”
The success of Siaya-Tango Surgical Camp sets a positive precedent for future outreach programs aimed at improving health outcomes across Siaya, bringing hope and healing to those in need.
The Surgical camp saw more than 100 patients undergoing successful surgeries in the 5 days.
The camp, which commenced on Monday, February 10th attracted hundreds of patients from Siaya and its environs.
According to Ryan Torrie, head of the Tango Delegation, many patients have been sent to the hospital’s surgical ward for post-operative monitoring, while others have been discharged.
In Bondo Hospital Alone, we have done 64 successful surgeries but the other five scheduled for today have been left in the hands of Siaya’s surgical doctors to deal with. We have trained some of them and are equipped with skills that would enable them to do successful surgeries in our absence, “said Dr Torrie.
He added that most of the Siaya patients suffered from hernia.
A hernia usually happens in one’s abdomen or groin, when one of the organs pushes through the muscle or tissue that contains it.
