Kenya’s Azimio leader, Raila Odinga, lost the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson election to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Youssouf. The election was tough, with Raila making it to the seventh round before Youssouf won with 33 votes.
Raila’s loss was met with mixed reactions from his supporters, many of whom had high hopes that he would take the top seat at the African Union. However, one of his closest allies, ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, has spoken out about what comes next.
Sifuna took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to share a heartfelt message with Raila. He assured him that he is still loved and appreciated back home. “My Boss. My Mentor. My Friend. My Leader. You still have a Home. Come back. We still Love you. We are Proud of you. Nothing has changed,” Sifuna wrote.
His message was seen as a call for Raila to return to Kenyan politics and continue leading his supporters. Many believe that Raila, who has vied for the presidency five times, still has a strong political influence in Kenya.
Although he did not win the AUC seat, Raila remains a key figure in African politics. His supporters now wait to see his next move. Will he focus on politics in Kenya, or will he take on a different leadership role in Africa? Only time will tell.
One thing is clear: his loyal supporters, including Senator Sifuna, are ready to welcome him back with open arms.
