To address concerns and set a clear path forward over the controversial Yala Delta land, Governor James Orengo has today engaged both Yimbo and Alego communities in a consultative meeting aimed at fostering mutual understanding between the community and Lake Agro Limited. The discussions centered on how Lake Agro, as an investor, could align its activities with the community’s interests, promoting economic growth, employment opportunities, and sustainable land use. The plan which includes identification and beaconing of the 1500 ha of the land for the Yimbo and Alego community to ensure that the communities benefit directly.
Gov. Orengo emphasized the need for a well-planned strategy to ensure the project delivers long-term economic benefits. He highlighted that, if properly managed, the project could positively impact over a million residents by enhancing agricultural production and stimulating local development. The residents, in turn, called for a structured land-use framework that guarantees maximum community benefit. They also urged the governor to oversee a resurvey and comprehensive land planning to secure long-term economic viability.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, the Governor assured residents that the county government would continue safeguarding land rights while seeking a balanced solution that fosters development and improves livelihoods. He noted that Yala Swamp holds immense agricultural potential, and with the right management strategies, it could significantly boost the region’s economy and contribute to poverty alleviation.
Orengo also reassured the community that his administration remains dedicated to protecting their rights and ensuring that land management aligns with legal frameworks that uphold community interests.
To push for an inclusive resolution, the County Government of Siaya is engaging all relevant parties, including The National Land Commission, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development to ensure that any leasing of community land adheres to the legal provisions of the Community Land Act and other legal provisions.
