Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out following a dramatic incident in the Mount Kenya region where his political tour was disrupted by chaos, forcing his motorcade to flee amid heavy police action.
The incident occurred as Gachagua was traveling to Kirinyaga County, with videos circulating online showing teargas being lobbed at his convoy and supporters scattering in Karatina town.
According to eyewitnesses and footage shared on social media, Gachagua’s motorcade encountered hostility along the Karatina route, prompting police officers to intervene using teargas.
The situation quickly escalated, with loud explosions, confusion, and panic among his supporters, forcing the convoy to change course as security teams struggled to contain the situation.
Despite the disruption, Gachagua later resurfaced in Kagio, Kirinyaga County, where he addressed a large crowd of supporters.

Speaking passionately, the former Deputy President condemned the events that unfolded earlier in the day, accusing state agencies of using excessive force to intimidate him and his supporters.
In a strong-worded statement, Gachagua said the attacks included teargas, alleged live ammunition, vandalism of equipment, and the involvement of what he termed “state-sponsored militia.”
He, however, praised the resilience of his supporters, noting that despite the violence and intimidation, they still managed to turn out in large numbers to listen to his message.
“Despite the heavy attack by police, live ammunition, teargas, vandalism of our equipment and state-sponsored militia and violent brutality of the state, we reached the very heart of Kirinyaga County—Kagio,” Gachagua said.
He further hailed the people of Kirinyaga as courageous and united, declaring that the region remains determined to pursue political change ahead of the August 10, 2027, General Election.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with supporters condemning the police response while others call for calm and adherence to the rule of law.
As political temperatures continue to rise in the Mount Kenya region, today’s events underscore the growing tension shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
