A notorious wash-wash artist who masquerades as a Legio Maria priest was on Monday afternoon thoroughly beaten by residents of Kodiere Market in West Alego Ward of Siaya County.
The man who is known to ply his trade in Nairobi attempted to defraud a Mpesa agent by depositing KES 7,000 in fake notes. The vigilant agent notified the scrupulous customer that he was privy to his tricks and that he should take his business elsewhere.
There ensued a loud altercation which attracted Bodaboda riders at a nearby stage. When the bulky wash-wash artist realized his days were numbered and he tried to take off in a sprint the riders took after him and in the process gave him the thrashing of a lifetime.
The man who was identified as Joseph Opondo Ochieng is a resident of Opar Sirinde village in West Alego. He had travelled as a pillion on a Bodaboda motorbike owned by one Oketch Huda.
Both Opondo Ochieng and Oketch Huda were taken into custody by police officers from Mwer Police Post. As of 11:00 pm Monday both were still in police custody pending processing and subsequent arraignment in Siaya Magistrate’s court tomorrow, Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
The police recovered an unspecified amount of fake KES 1,000 notes, a rosary and some amulets from the suspect.
