Who is Siaya First Lady Professor Betty Kaari Murungi?
She is the only sibling of former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi and the second wife of Siaya County Governor James Orengo. They are the parents of six children. She graduated from the University of Nairobi with a bachelor’s degree in law.
Betty is a lawyer with approximately 30 years of diverse legal experience at the national, regional, and international levels, as well as 10 years of management and governance expertise in non-governmental and non-profit organizations. She has held the position of Professor of Practice at SOAS University of London, where she has played an important role in the emerging jurisprudence of international criminal law and international humanitarian law as it relates to gender crimes, as well as experience in transitional justice processes, women’s human rights, constitutionalism, governance, and social justice philanthropy.
She also served as Vice Chairperson and Commissioner to the Kenya Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission and as the African representative on the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for Victims at the ICC from 2009 to 2013.
