A drunk police officer on Sunday night shot and fatally injured his boss in Mweiga town, Nyeri county.

It all started when the senior officer confronted the suspect who was enjoying drinks at a local pub and thereafter a verbal altercation occurred. The boss ordered his junior to board the police vehicle and report back to the station, but the suspect turned violent which led to the shooting.

He is said to have stormed out of the bar after a bitter exchange and threatened unspecified action against his boss. The suspect returned and started shooting indiscriminately, and in the process, he fatally injured his senior. The said officer later shot himself.

The two officers were rushed to hospital for treatment. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of that shooting.

The incident comes at a time when there have been rising concerns over the mental issues of police officers.
