West Gem Member of County Assembly Susan Achieng Okwiri has decried the proliferation in her Ward of a strange mix of brew said to emanate from Uganda.

While speaking to a vernacular radio station Ms. Okwiri revealed that the brew arrives in powder form and is then mixed with water and exposed to the sunshine for quick fermentation before consumption.

“It is not known what chemical formulation or potency the brew contains,” said Ms. Okwiri adding, “I therefore plead with all law enforcement agencies to come help us route these scrupulous dealers out before they harm the people consuming this dangerous brand of alcohol. The youth are target victims but sadly even women and the elderly are now consuming the dangerous brew.”

The areas of Nango and Rabuor Shopping Centres are hubs of commercial activity in the nucleus of the Ramula gold boom.

According to Susan Okwiri the dispensers of the alcohol are well-known vendors and the community is ready and willing to share information with the police to help apprehend them.

Last year six people died and two others sustained permanent visual damage in Kubweye village Kuria West sub-County in Migori County after consuming uncertified local brews.

The six included the brewer and a seller .

“They went to drink at night and when they came back they started complaining of poor vision, breathing problems and difficulty in talking,” Nancy Chacha, a resident said over the incident.

“At first we thought it was a normal effect of alcohol before we were alarmed when other drinkers complained of the same.”

Kubweye village elder Patel Matiko Nyamohanga said the victims were rushed to two hospitals in Mabera town where four were pronounced dead on arrival while two others died later.

To avert such calamity Gem West MCA Ms Susan Okwiri now calls for administrators and the police to lend a hand in containing the situation.
