Gor Mahia has successfully retained the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title winning it for the 21st time in the club’s history.
K’Ogalo defeated Muhoroni Youth 3-0 on Sunday, ensuring they retain the title with three matches remaining in the season, thanks to goals from Benson Omala, Boniface Omondi, and Austin Odhiambo.
With their triumph, Gor Mahia have made a dramatic turnaround over the course of the season to clinch the title.
Kenya Police FC were the main challengers for the title but their loss to Tusker on Saturday meant that Gor Mahia needed one point in their last four matches to be crowned champions.
Gor Mahia have now qualified for next season’s CAF Champions League; a feat which they surrendered last season after they failed to comply with club licensing requirements.
K’Ogalo were awarded a penalty in the 42nd minute and Omala stepped in but failed to convert the spot-kick as he sent the ball over the bar.
The former Western Stima man made amends two minutes later when he received a pass from inside the box before firing the ball into the empty net.
The second half was more lively compared to the opening stanza as Muhoroni found it difficult to unlock a resolute Gor Mahia defence.
K’Ogalo managed to extend their lead in the 48th minute when Boniface Omondi rushed to the ball and made it 2-0.
The visitors squandered half-chances at the other end of the pitch as Muhoroni grew increasingly frustrated.
Adebowale Samuel beat his marker inside the hosts’ box, but he was superbly denied by goalkeeper Kevin Omondi.
Muhoroni continued to push for their first goal of the match but they were leaving spaces behind their defence and they were punished by Austin Odhiambo who made it 3-0 with Ronny Onyango providing the assist.
Jonathan McKinstry charges eased off the throttle somewhat and nearly added a fourth in the 80th minute when Wangai provided a low cross from the right which was Patrick Kaddu failed to convert.
Gor Mahia deserved winners in the end as they retained the league title with three rounds of fixtures in the 2023-24 season remaining.
Despite the defeat, Muhoroni know that only victory over Talanta, Nzoia and Posta Rangers in the remaining three matches will secure safety.
