Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been acquitted of terrorism charges.
The Kahawa Law Courts on Wednesday approved the recommendations of the office of the Deputy Public Prosecutor to drop charges against Sonko and his co-accused.
Speaking outside the law courts Sonko said he was happy of the outcome and that he had always known the case was politically instigated and subsequently he forgave his accusers.
“I have been innocent all the time as the case was political. During my tenure as the Governor, I was invited to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York, how could I have been linked with terrorism?” Sonko said.
ADVERTISEMENTHe went on to say that his two accused persons suffered because of his political affiliation and yet they were only workers for the Nairobi City County government and not politicians.
He said that he wouldn’t wish anybody to be associated with terrorism charges because of their political links.
ADVERTISEMENTSonko and his lawyers said they will not sue the state for damages.
They were charged with the offences in 2021 and they denied all the charges.
DPP applied for the case to be dropped, a request which was granted Wednesday.
