The Kenya Union of Post-primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called off strike after reaching a deal with the Teachers Service Commission.

The deal comes as the strike, which entered its second week on Monday, prompted some schools to send learners back home.

The deal to call off the strike was reached Monday evening, with TSC assuring teachers that none of them will be victimised for participating in the strike.

At some point the commission had threatened the striking teachers with the sack as the strike was considered illegal.

It is not yet clear whether the government has agreed to implement the collective bargaining agreements which had led to the strike. All that is known is that KUPPET bigwigs including Secretary-general Akello Misori called off the strike early Monday evening after a meeting with TSC boss Nancy Macharia.

All remaining issues, KUPPET says, will be resolved during the suspension of the strike.
