President William Ruto has hit out at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua accusing him of engaging in divisive politics.

Speaking in Kakamega County on Monday, January 20, Ruto criticized what he described as a trend of tribalism, political mischief, and divisive rhetoric.

In reference to Gachagua, he urged politicians to focus on uniting the country and addressing developmental issues rather than relying on hate or ethnic divisions for political mileage.

“There are people trying to compete with us; but you like mischief, tribalism, and government shareholding, who will you compete with in this country? I want to tell them, that they should look for better things to sell to the people because you can’t thrive on hate, tribalism, and dividing people. That’s stupidity,” Ruto said.

This comes a day after Gachagua hit out at Ruto accusing him of using MPs as mouthpieces for his alleged political agenda.

Speaking during a church service in Laikipia on Sunday, January 19, Gachagua said the comments made by the MP were not his own but directives from Ruto.

The former Deputy President claimed that Ruto orchestrates political narratives by instructing leaders on what to say during public forums.

“When you hear MPs talking, he (Ruto) is the one who has sent them. I was with him, and he would instruct me on what to say. I complied for a while but later stopped listening to him. He sits there with a pen instructing leaders on what to say. It reached a point when he would instruct me on what to say, but I’d get to the podium and speak about other things,” Gachagua said.

He added, “The MP from Western who is saying that Mt. Kenya would be isolated, that is not the MP speaking, that is William Ruto; that is his plan. But it will not happen.”
