Uncertainty continues to surround the health of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, with mixed reports over the weekend sparking concern and speculation among his supporters nationwide.
On Sunday, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) fraternity made a heartfelt appeal to Kenyans to pray for their party leader’s recovery, as confusion mounted over his condition.
Leading the call was Suba South Member of Parliament Caroli Omondi, who urged Christians across the country to dedicate special prayers for Mr. Odinga. Speaking during a church service in Homa Bay, Omondi said Raila has played an unparalleled role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape and deserves the nation’s collective goodwill and prayers.
“This is a time for unity and faith. Raila Odinga is not just a political leader; he is a national figure who has sacrificed greatly for Kenya. Let us keep him in our prayers and avoid speculation,” Omondi told congregants.
The legislator emphasized that the former Prime Minister’s well-being remains a matter of national concern, urging Kenyans to show compassion rather than indulge in unfounded rumors circulating on social media.
Reports about Mr. Odinga’s health have been conflicting, with no official statement yet issued by his family or ODM party leadership. Nonetheless, his supporters have flooded social media platforms with messages of encouragement, expressing hope for his quick recovery and continued strength.

Adding to the growing chorus, Luo political commentator Odoyo Owidi, who is known to have close links within power circles, on Saturday morning circulated a video clip across major Nyanza WhatsApp groups imploring Kenyans to pray for Raila. Owidi’s emotional message resonated with many in the region, amplifying the collective sense of concern and solidarity.
Meanwhile, Governance expert Cathy Irungu has weighed in on the debate, calling for sensitivity and restraint in how the matter is being handled. She noted that while it is natural for citizens to express concern over the health of a national icon of Raila’s stature, the issue has been unnecessarily politicized by rival camps within ODM and the broader opposition.

“This is a deeply personal matter that should be approached with empathy, not political opportunism,” Irungu said. “Kenyans should allow space for the family and party to communicate formally instead of speculating.”
Her remarks come amid claims that the ODM leader had been hospitalized abroad—allegations the party swiftly dismissed, clarifying that Mr. Odinga was on an official trip outside the country.
Political observers say the controversy underscores the intense scrutiny and polarization that often surround Kenya’s top political figures. Despite the rumors, ODM maintains that its leader remains active in his official duties, reaffirming his role in both national and regional political engagements.
As the nation awaits clarity on the matter, one message continues to echo across Kenya: a collective hope and prayer for Raila Odinga’s good health and full recovery.
