The National State Funeral Committee has announced that the funeral service of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga will take place today on Sunday, October 19, at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County.
According to the committee, the service will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until 1:00 p.m., after which Raila’s body will be taken to his ancestral home at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi for final prayers, committal, and full military honours.
The solemn photograph caption shows the body of Raila Odinga arriving at Nyayo Stadium, escorted by military officers — a poignant symbol of national respect for a man who shaped Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
In a statement on Saturday evening, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who chairs the National State Funeral Committee, said that while Sunday’s burial marks the culmination of official mourning ceremonies, Kenyans should expect additional events and commemorations in the coming days to further celebrate Raila’s legacy.
“The National State Funeral Committee will announce details of subsequent events and activities to further honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga after tomorrow’s interment rites,” Kindiki stated.
The Deputy President also extended the government’s gratitude to the public, security officers, and emergency services for their cooperation and composure during the ceremonial processions at Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu, where thousands gathered on Saturday to pay their final respects.
Raila Odinga’s funeral, blending state protocol with Luo cultural traditions, is expected to draw thousands of mourners — including dignitaries from across Africa and beyond — as Kenya bids farewell to one of its most consequential political figures.
The State Funeral Committee is expected to release additional details on post-burial tributes, memorial activities, and legacy projects in honour of the late opposition leader, ensuring that the “People’s President” continues to be remembered long after the last rites are performed.
