A somber mood has engulfed the General Service Unit (GSU) Recce Camp in Kimbo, Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County, after one of its officers died in a freak accident while washing his bicycle.

The officer, identified as Police Constable Benedict Juma Oduori, is said to have been cleaning his personal bicycle on Saturday, October 25, 2025, using an electric car wash machine when tragedy struck.

According to a police report filed by Chief Inspector Meshack Ikuthu, Oduori was found lying unconscious by the camp’s sentry while still clutching the machine, which was suspected to have short-circuited and delivered a fatal electric shock.

“He was rushed to the camp dispensary before being referred to Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment,” the report reads in part.

A postmortem examination was later conducted at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital to establish the precise cause of death, which is believed to be consistent with electrocution.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed concern over electrical safety awareness, particularly the risks of using power-operated equipment in wet conditions without proper insulation or grounding.

Residents and colleagues have described Oduori as a disciplined and dedicated officer, whose untimely demise has left a void in the tight-knit GSU community.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the safety standards of electrical installations and washing equipment within the camp to prevent similar occurrences.
