Kenya’s fast-evolving retail landscape has produced a standout success story—Quickmart Supermarkets. From a modest family-run outlet in Nakuru to a nationwide chain with 60 stores across 16 counties, Quickmart’s rise captures resilience, smart partnerships, and bold expansion in a competitive market.

Quickmart was founded in 2006 by the late John Kinuthia in Nakuru as a small, family-owned supermarket. Built on a customer-first philosophy and disciplined growth, the business steadily expanded its footprint beyond its Rift Valley roots.

Following Kinuthia’s death in 2016, leadership transitioned to his family. Within a year, the company crossed a major milestone—annual revenues surpassing KSh 1 billion—signaling strong operational continuity and rising consumer trust.

At the helm, Managing Director Duncan Kinuthia steered the brand into a new phase of growth, modernizing operations and scaling the store network. The turning point came in 2019, when Quickmart merged with Tumaini Self Service Limited—a strategic move that instantly boosted its national presence.

The merger created one of Kenya’s largest retail networks at the time, with 25 outlets, placing the new entity among the country’s top supermarket chains by store count.

Quickmart’s growth story accelerated further with investment from Adenia Partners, which came in through its Kenyan subsidiary Sokoni Retail Kenya. The private equity backing injected capital, governance, and expansion expertise, transforming Quickmart into a modern retail powerhouse.

To complement ownership and strategy, seasoned executive Peter Kang’iri joined as CEO in 2019, bringing structured management and a sharper growth agenda. Together with Duncan Kinuthia, the leadership team has overseen rapid scaling and operational efficiency.

Today, Quickmart boasts 60 outlets spread across 16 counties, with a heavy concentration in Nairobi—the country’s commercial hub. Its branches dot key neighborhoods including Buru Buru, Donholm, Embakasi, Kahawa Sukari, Kilimani, Lavington, and along major corridors like Thika Road and the Eastern Bypass.

A defining feature of the brand is its round-the-clock model, with many outlets operating 24 hours—a strategy that caters to urban lifestyles and sets it apart from traditional retail schedules.

Quickmart’s ascent comes against the backdrop of a shifting retail sector, where established giants have struggled and new players have emerged. By blending local roots with institutional investment, Quickmart has carved out a competitive edge—balancing affordability, accessibility, and convenience.

With strong backing, professional leadership, and an aggressive expansion strategy, Quickmart is well-positioned to deepen its national footprint and challenge for the top spot in Kenya’s supermarket hierarchy.

From a single store in Nakuru to a retail force redefining convenience shopping, Quickmart’s journey is more than growth—it’s a blueprint for surviving and thriving in Kenya’s dynamic consumer economy.
