Raila Amollo Odinga yesterday received renewed support on his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship from Fawzia Yusuf Adam, former Somali Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs.
This support was significant in that Fawzia had earlier indicated interest to vie for the position herself and had amassed support from the Muslim conglomeration of States in Africa.
The renewed support is closely tied in to the Kenya government’s resolve to go all-out and campaign for Raila’s candidacy.
Already there’s an unspecified budgetary allocation set aside for the exercise as earlier intimated by Government honcho Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi.
The equation is now in Raila’s favour that the Kenyan government is indebted to him following the role he played in quelling the Gen Z uprising.
Raila is seen to have betrayed the younger generation protestors whom he obliquely offered mouth-support while he waggered a deal with President Dr William Samoei Ruto behind the scenes.
It will be interesting to see what changes Raila henchmen can bring to a government already steeped deeply in corruption and financial mismanagement. What is even more interesting is whether civil society can hold government accountable now that political and religious leaders have abdicated that duty.
