Orengo, Odumo, Raila Among Luo Top Brass to Mourn Historian Bethwel Allan Ogot

Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo on Thursday afternoon was among top Luo leaders to send condolences to the family and friends of the late Professor Bethwel Allan Ogot who died Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at a Kisumu hospital.

Senior Counsel Orengo described the late Ogot as “one of the greatest scholars of our time”. Orengo said Ogot had left a legacy of seminal works and historical treatises.

“A true thinker and intellectual par excellence. He now “belongs to the ages”. Rest in eternal peace,” read the touching message by the Siaya Governor.

A statement signed by Africa Union Commission Chairmanship candidate Raila Amollo Odinga stated: “Prof. Bethwel Ogot was in the category of the now increasingly rare and outnumbered internationally known, deep, independent and professional scholars who treasured academic excellence and the value of knowledge to a community and a nation.

Kisumu County Senatorial aspirant Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro in a heart-rending message said: “Professor Bethwel Ogot was a distinguished scholar and pioneering historian who leaves behind a lasting legacy that has shaped Kenya’s historiography. His passing marks the loss of an intellectual giant whose contributions to academia and research remain invaluable.”

Odumo further described Ogot as a steadfast champion of higher education who advanced scholarship and institutional growth, notably as Chancellor of Moi University.

Gem member of parliament Elisha Odhiambo Akuba has said Ogot was a visionary historian and selfless leader. “His legacy, including the gift of land for Odera Akang’o University, will forever uplift generations. On behalf of the people of Gem, I extend my heartfelt condolences, praying for comfort and strength for the bereaved. Rest in eternal peace, Prof,” said the message by Akuba.

Siaya Deputy Governor Dr William Oduol Denge has described the late Ogot as a towering academic figure whose influence will live on for time immemorial.

Meanwhile, condolence messages continue to pour in for the academic icon who died Thursday morning at the age of 95, leaving behind not just a wealth of knowledge but an intellectual legacy that will inspire generations to come.
