Residents of Miru village in Yala sub-County yesterday woke up to the shocking news of a young woman who had taken her life, ostensibly, because of lack of employment.
Vera Amondi Okoth, aged 27 was found hanging in the family outdoor bathroom with a rope around her neck.
The widowed elderly mother said her daughter had constantly complained that out of the 500 applications she sent to look for employment, not a single job had been offered to her.
The police report indicates the mother stumbled upon the body after searching for her daughter futilely in her sleeping quarters yesterday morning. The mother, an early riser, had gone to wake her up to attend to daily chores on the farm when her absence in her room alarmed her.
Although Vera had left no suicide note her academic certificates were spread out on the bed.
Officers from Yala Police Station arrived and processed the scene, determining there were no obvious injuries apart from the fact that she had asphyxiated to death.
Among the certificates spread out on the bed was a Bachelor of Science degree awarded to the deceased in 2019 from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
According to the mother Vera had always bemoaned the fact of her unemployment.
The body has been moved to the Yala sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
A Police Investigation File has been opened for the incident although preliminary reports indicate death by suicide.
