Sh1.9 Billion Infrastructure Marvel Fast-Tracked for June 2026 Completion – Connecting Siaya to Busia, Boosting Trade, Jobs and Lives
For decades, the Dho-Goye Bridge in Usenge, Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County, stood as Siaya’s ultimate symbol of broken political promises. Every election cycle, aspiring leaders waxed lyrical about this strategic crossing over River Yala – the vital link where the river meets Lake Victoria – pledging to replace the unreliable old causeway with a modern, all-weather bridge. Votes secured, the promises vanished into thin air.
Until President Dr. William Samoei Ruto arrived.
In October 2023, during his landmark development tour of Nyanza, President Ruto stood at the site, inspected the stalled project that had begun in July 2021 only to grind to a halt, and made a bold commitment: the Dho-Goye Bridge would be completed within 18 months under his administration. True to his word, he revived the project through the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), injecting fresh momentum, funding, and urgency.
Fast-forward to 2026: the dream is now a construction powerhouse. At Sh1.9 billion, the high-capacity bridge – complete with upgraded approach roads – is under full steam. Cabinet Secretaries Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and John Mbadi (National Treasury), alongside local leaders including Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi, and Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, conducted a high-level inspection in January 2026. Engineers confirmed deep foundations are progressing, materials are procured, and the entire corridor is being fast-tracked for commissioning by June 2026.
“This bridge will ensure quick, safe and cheap movement of goods and people,” President Ruto declared during his 2023 visit. Roads CS Davis Chirchir echoed the vision: the project “will alleviate logistical challenges faced by residents and businesses who have previously relied on longer routes or seasonal crossings.” Senator Moses Kajwang’ added that the completed structure will serve as “a vital artery for trade and movement within the Lake Victoria basin,” slashing travel times and unlocking economic potential.
The impact? Transformative.
Once finished, the Dho-Goye Bridge will create a seamless, reliable link between Siaya and Busia counties, opening up cross-border trade, reducing transport costs, and stimulating agribusiness, fishing, and tourism in the region. Farmers in Bondo and Usenge will reach bigger markets faster; fish traders from Lake Victoria will move goods without the seasonal headaches; and thousands of residents will enjoy safer daily commutes. During construction alone, hundreds of local jobs have been created – a classic example of President Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda delivering tangible opportunities where they matter most.
Critics once dismissed Siaya as an opposition stronghold where national government projects stall. President Ruto has rewritten that narrative. By reviving a project others only talked about, his administration has proven that leadership is not about rhetoric – it’s about results. From digital hubs to roads, electricity connections, and now this flagship bridge, Siaya is rising.
Residents who waited decades for action are now witnessing history in real time. As one local leader put it during recent site visits: “This is what delivery looks like.”
President Ruto’s message to Siaya – and Kenya at large – is loud and clear: promises made are promises kept. The Dho-Goye Bridge is not just concrete and steel; it is proof that visionary leadership can turn political dreams into economic engines.
Siaya is no longer waiting. Thanks to President Dr William Samoei Ruto, the future has arrived – and it crosses the Dho-Goye Bridge.
