Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of delivering conflicting messages to the public and engaging in double-talk.
Speaking during a Monday morning interview on Kameme TV on February 23, 2026, Kiunjuri described Gachagua as a leader whose current rhetoric often contradicts his previous stance. He highlighted what he called blatant inconsistencies, particularly after Gachagua exited government.
“When Rigathi Gachagua was in government, he told Kenyans that the country was broke, but now, because he is not in government, he is telling Kenyans that the government is not working but stealing public money,” Kiunjuri said.
Kiunjuri also questioned whether Gachagua’s claims of strong grassroots support reflect his actual political commitment. He suggested that the former deputy president’s actions are driven more by electoral ambition than a genuine desire to serve the public.
The MP further challenged Gachagua’s claim to be the sole voice for the Mt. Kenya region, arguing that it disregards other leaders and parties within the United Opposition. According to Kiunjuri, no single individual can legitimately claim to represent the entire region without first securing broad consensus.
“Rigathi claims that he is a listener to the ground. Why does he not hear the ground selectively?” Kiunjuri added.
In Kiunjuri’s view, effective leadership requires inclusivity, transparency, and a consistent strategy, rather than messaging that shifts with political winds or personal interests. While he acknowledged Gachagua’s ability to energize his supporters, Kiunjuri warned that continued mixed messaging could erode public trust.
A staunch supporter of the Kenya Kwanza administration, Kiunjuri has emerged as one of Gachagua’s most vocal critics in recent months.
