CA Chair Mary Wambui Academic Credentials Challenged by Human Rights Commission

The Commission of Human Rights and Justice (CHRJ) has written to the Kenya Methodist University (KEMU). The human rights commision is seeking clarifications on the academic credentials of Communications Authority (CA) Board chair Mary Wambui Mungai.

Previously, CHRJ had challenged the academic credentials of Ms. Mungai in court. Now, the commission has taken the matter to the steps of KEMU.

“As the commission is obligated to inquire about the status and capacity of leaders to be entrusted to hold such positions of Authority, in light of the foregoing, we implore your good off to confirm if the above subject matter was a student. We kindly need the following: A certified copy of the examination transcript, graduation booklet, whether you offer a degree of upper second class,” wrote the Executive Director, Julius Ogogoh.

The letter from the commission is dated 20/9/2023. It is addressed to the vice-chancellor of Academic and Research Affairs and marked as urgent.

It is alleged Ms. Mary Wambui claims to have undertaken a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Further, she claims to have attained Upper Second Class in the year 2005-2008.

Stating the claims are “ nothing short of fluttery words to win the confidence of the office she holds” the commission seeks to have KEMU present the academic documentation of the current CA chair.

This probe comes shortly after the Chair announced the surprise and sudden suspension of Ezra Chiloba. Mr. Chiloba was the Director General at the authority and was suspended on allegations of fraud.

Mary Wambui Tax Evasion Allegations
Ms. Mary Wambui Mungai was appointed to the position on 2nd December 2022 by President Ruto after the resignation of the then Chair Mr. Gilbert Kibe.

In January, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) dropped a tax evasion case facing Ms. Mungai. She was facing eight counts of unlawfully omitting income tax returns of her company between 2014 and 2019. The Kenya Revenue Authority was seeking taxes amounting to KES 2.2 billion.

This came a few months after another case that involved the possession of firearms and ammunition illegally was also dropped.

In the past, Mary Wambui has served on the board of the Kenyatta National Hospital for seven years.
