A poll conducted by Kisumu-based pollster Afropolls has placed Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo at the bottom of the rung among Nyanza Governors.
James Aggrey Bob Orengo’s popularity has taken a nosedive ever since he took over as Siaya Governor.
The fairly scientific poll covered 4500 respondents based in Nyanza. Data collection centred on sentiment analysis, telephonic interviews and direct questionnaires.
The poll duration was between October 24 to October 31, 2023, sampling randomly among residents aged 18 years and above and residing in both rural and urban areas.
While we do not buy fully into the figures arrived at in the Afropolls Gubernatorial Performance Index, the report has an uncanny ring of truth.
Of the six Nyanza County governors, Orengo scored 4 percent, losing out even to Nyamira’s Amos Nyaribo who had a score of 11 percent beating Migori’s Ochillo Ayacko and Siaya’s James Orengo.
“Our key focus questions are mostly on service delivery based on the promises made by the Governors during campaigns. We also focus on performance in the priority sectors of infrastructure, education, health and agriculture,” an official of Afropolls told this writer.
Lately, Governor Orengo has suffered from a spree of negative publicity even when his team struggles to make him appear on top of things.
Orengo is besieged by calls on over-recruitment of county staff, dishing out tenders to cronies (something the MCAs are hanging upon to wager county ward allocation tenders) and the simmering war between himself and his Deputy Dr William Oduol Denge.
The Deputy Governor has threatened to sue Orengo if he does not step in and stop Jaswant Singh Rai who owns Lake Agro Limited from taking up an extra 3,200 hectares of land in Yala Swamp delta for a leasehold of 66 years.
