A middle aged woman lost her life yesterday in Ramula area in East Gem Constituency of Siaya County when she slipped into an open cave that was dug by the miners for purposes of gold prospecting.
Ramula area in East Gem Constituency lies between River Dhene and River Awach that separates Siaya county from Kisumu County.
The area is popular for its gold deposits that have been the source of controversy between residents and an investor.
An eyewitness reported that the woman, Mary Auma, slipped and fell into the camouflaged deep cave that was covered with brush outgrowth.
The mining site is further made treacherous by wet conditions brought about by the heavy rainfall currently experienced in the western region of Kenya.
Her body has been taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
The residents intent on making fast money have neglected caution by the authorities and proceed with illegal mining in that area. Their activities pose a high risk to human life and degradation on environment. It’s not the first time such an accident is occurring in the same place.
