In an unexpected move on Christmas Day, Richards Bay has parted ways with coach Kaitano Tembo and promptly appointed Vusimuzi Vilakazi as the interim coach until further notice.

Tembo, who took the reins ahead of the 2023/24 season, faced a challenging tenure, securing only four victories out of 18 games during his time in charge in KwaZulu-Natal.

Despite a commendable journey to the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout, the team found themselves grappling in the league, currently occupying the 15th position with a modest tally of 10 points from 15 games.

The recent 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs served as the tipping point for the club’s leadership, leading to Tembo’s dismissal on the festive occasion.

“Richards Bay Football Club would like to announce the release of the Head Coach Mr. Kaitano Tembo with immediate effect,” the official statement read.

“The Club would like to thank the coach for his contribution during this season. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

“Senior Coach Mr. Vusi Vilakazi will take over the first team until further notice.”

In his 18-game tenure, Tembo’s record includes four victories, four draws, and 10 losses.

The club’s decision reflects a commitment to reshaping their trajectory for the remainder of the season, placing their trust in Vilakazi to guide the team through this transitional period as they seek to avoid relegation.
