Recently a story about the daughter of a prominent politician selling smokies to survive at Daystar University was flagged by Kenyans on Twitter as fake.

Here is the story of another high-flying personality from one of Kenya’s wealthiest dynasties who had to actually wash dishes to survive through university in Canada.

Jaoko Oburu Odinga is his name. The 50-year-old man is the son of Siaya senator Oburu Odinga and the nephew of Raila Amolo Odinga, the 2022 presidential petitioner.

He has served as a member of the East African Legislative Assembly, as the Executive for Roads and Public Works in Siaya County, and as an investment and resource mobilization advisor.

Jaoko recalls how he survived in Canada, where he had gone to complete his education. In an interview, he disclosed that his parents did not want him to go to Canada and offered him the opportunity to study in another country, which he declined.

He was then enrolled at St. Marys University in Canada, where he pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a focus in accounting and finance. He stated that he was struggling to make ends meet and chose to wash pots and cook food for a $5 per hour minimum wage. He would do this on a daily basis to supplement his income.
