“In the case of equal opportunity in education, male counterparts still far outnumber girls in school attendance and this translates into an ailing society. We fully support Wakili’s endeavours to see that enrollment of all children in primary schools and transition to secondary schools reaches the one hundred per cent mark in Kisumu East.”

Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro said the effect of poverty and social status on women’s health is a universal scourge. He cited a report by the Department of Gender, Women and Health of the World Health Organization which says women are facing more hazards in the field of health due to less education that leads to a poor economic status. For a long time, women have paid the price of poverty. Due to this low status

“We know that women all over the world are subjected to unwarranted sexual and physical violence by their intimate male partners,” Wakili said, adding “In areas such as Nyalenda and Manyatta this abuse starts as early as the age of 15. Women bear the heaviest workload but their efforts are not adequately compensated. I can assure you that I, Fred Odumo Nying’uro will work towards rectifying that.”

Wakili also said that irrespective of gender he has a work plan to actively involve everyone to participate in the development of Kisumu by providing seed money for viable projects.

The Kisumu East sub-County officials on their part urged re-evaluation of joblessness as impacting on insecurity in the informal settlements. They asked Wakili to engage development partners outside the county and assist in sourcing more investments.

The Kisumu East sub-county comprises East Kolwa, Manyatta, Nyalenda and West Kajulu Wards.
