Jared J Owino confidently pocketed the KICOSCA hammer title in Kakamega with a monster opening throw of 23.1 meters.
Owino said his victory was a result of constant practice and the prevailing spirit of sportsmanship among his teammates and fellow competitors.
“During the last KICOSCA games held In Meru I bagged the golden medal after covering a distance of 25 meters while during trials held in Siaya I led with 30 meters,” said a delighted Owino.
The athlete also took the hammer title in the EALASKA games held in Kisumu.
Owino, nonetheless, cited lack of coach and implements as part of the challenges that derails the county athletes’ performance,
“The implements I have been training with are mine so if the County government can support us with such implements, certainly we will do much better,” said Owino revealing that Siaya lacks a coach in the discipline.
Meanwhile, in athletics, Jackline Atieno from Siaya County bagged a bronze medal after coming third in the 400 meters women’s hurdle with an incredible time of 2:2.
“We have qualified for finals of 4 by 1 men’s relay and women race while Clifford Kut from Siaya has qualified for 400 meters final at 59:9:8,” said KICOSCA National Coordinator Athletics Kazi Oduor.
“Paul Owinga is headed for 100 Meters final after he became second in their hit with 12:1:6,” said Oduor.
In the cultural events, Siaya’s choir earned 85 and 83 points on set piece and own composition songs respectively.
Siaya County choir secured position 4 on set piece while own composition (Anga Uzuri Kwa Wanagatuzi) was position 6 out of the 47 counties that participated in the activities.
Siaya choir was ranked 7th in the Taarab borrowed dance.
Siaya Chess team (women) claimed bronze medal after battling it out with 13 counties that registered for the 11th edition of the tournament ongoing in Kakamega County.
“Nairobi and Narok counties secured position 1 and 2 respectively,” Eddie Ogola has said..
In the men’s category, Siaya team emerged position 3 out of 23 counties. Nairobi County was position 1 and Kericho County position 2.
On Thursday, Siaya women’s handball team defeated their archrivals Bungoma to reclaim the golden trophy they last won in 2023 competitions in Meru County.
Handball Captain Pauline Owegi said they thrashed Bungoma 8-4 to win women’s handball gold in Kakamega.
Siaya put its stamp on the match after leading 5-4 in the first half. The dominance continued in the next 30 minutes as Siaya scored another 3 to keep its heavy lead intact against Bungoma.
Siaya’s attack converted 75% of its shots and Owegi led the team’s scoring with 4 goals.
From the start, there was nothing to separate these two teams. When Siaya would score, Bungoma would answer right back with a goal — and vice versa. It was certainly an entertaining game for neutrals but the match ended in the first half with 5-4.
Siaya scrabble team won the 11th edition of KICOSCA competition that attracted 47 men and 30 women.
This three-day championship got underway on Tuesday and climaxed on Wednesday when teams were ranked and Siaya scrabble team of both men and women lifted the golden title.
Team Siaya was in great form to take home the glittering trophy.
The triumphant side was spurred by their most outstanding player in the men’s category, Ang’awa who won with 11 points and lost 4 games.
“I thank team Siaya for the collective effort and we ought to work harder for the subsequent tournaments” said Ang’awa adding that George Okello was fourth best player with 10 and-half wins . He lost 10 and half while Julius Odhiambo was ranked 7th though third be.
He won 10 games and lost 5 games.
“We attribute the victory to Julius who was the most improved player. He was among top ten.”
In the previous contest Busia was a threat to Siaya but this year the tables were turned around and with the input of the Senior Ang’awa (John Ang’awa and Bob Awino) the team hopes to retain dominance.
In the women category, Nairobi players were ranked position 1 and 2 respectively while Merceline Amuga from Siaya came third best after winning 8-and-half games and losing 3-and-half.
